Latest Aquarium Setup

Daughter and I set up our tank again (we fell out of it after the last established tank crashed and we lost every fish in two days). Still fighting some water born algae blooms and introducing fish. Love having it back again! What's the G+ community to be in for freshwater aquarium advice??

Can't tell from the pic, are those live plants?

I'm not aware of a community but I've been keeping one for a long time, and my finding is that a natural balance is the key to a low-maintenance, beautiful aquarium. The more you try to fight nature the more it fights you.

Substrate should be at least 3 inches deep and fine.. sand is best. That way anaerobic bacteria have a safe haven where they can convert the ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate.. which can be then used by plants as fertilizers.

Real plants are a must, they use up the chemicals that fish poo breaks down into and use it to grow, they also put more oxygen into the water and provide cover for baby fish.

Snails are not your enemy. Especially MTS (Malaysian trumpet snails). They keep the substrate mixed up and prevent build-up of deadly gasses. They also break down fish poo for the bacteria and control algae.

Assassin snails are key for keeping the MTS under control.. they have an extremely slow reproduction rate and will often die before reproducing as fish eat their eggs. They eat other snails.

Establish a good, well rounded cleanup crew in your tank and the water will stay clear and your maintenance will be mostly monthly water changes and filter cleaning.

    Very good job +Maddie Cramer!! ….and +Scott Cramer too…

    I see a familiar fishy…do I not? 🙂

  6. Sheila Garl says:

The bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrite are aerobic, those that process nitrite to nitrate are anaerobic, and seldom thrive in freshwater tanks. Live plants and frequent water changes will be better methods to manage and stabilize an aquarium.

Nice setup. Go slow in adding fish–that you already have an algae bloom indicates something is out of balance. Hold off adding more fish until you get that sorted.

I am a fresh water tropical fish enthusiast and used to breed fish. I had a few disasters over the last few decades where I also lost all fish, so, I can relate. Currently I am not in the position to have an aquarium, but will in the future again. Very happy to join a group, too!

Pretty! Well done dad n Maddie! 🙂

I like the expression on the dragon as he anticipates the rain cloud that appears over him.

Carp. Nasty critters eat their own poo. They can survive darn near anything….the exception being jumping out of the tank and lying in the floor for a couple of hours.

I have a live-planted 90gal with angels, kribs, neons, and serpae tetras. The algae never goes away entirely, but right now it's managed. I have found that whenever I've increased the number of plants in the tank, the algae seems to go into remission. Makes sense — the plants are taking up more of the nutrients out of the water and starving the algae.

Good comments and suggestions, thank you all! I will digest more later and comment!!! Silly work demanding that I work. 😉
