I would have purchased the realistic version for my daughter in a heart beat. Toy companies really should give us parents a chance. I mean, seriously, who is demanding the super fake Barbie? Collectors? Aliens?

I preferred cars, Legos, Lincoln Logs, Lite Brite, the fake plastic food and bugs and animals (the generic toys were always great because you could think up a million things to do with them), and G. I. Joes as a kid, but I did have some Barbies, too. I remember I had one of those Skipper dolls (that's what the "teen" Barbie was, right?) that when you rotated one of her arms around it made her grow boobs.

I like both – I like variety. I am a collector, and I would honestly buy both. Some of us are gorgeous, there's nothing wrong with that (but why is it okay to bad-mouth them?) and some of us are average… Without average the amazing wouldn't exist. I would love my collection to reflect that.

Well, no, but she's a doll, and as far as fashion dolls go, she's fairly normal. Her neck and legs are too long and her head's too big, other than that she's quite proportionate. She is, after all, classified as a fashion doll, so to compare her with the average woman on the street is not what she's about, she should be compared to a super model, and for a super model, she's got quite wide hips…

😀 Barbie's bodytype in 1959 and in 1966 was totally different to what she looks like today. Also, her shape was to accommodate a corset, which was the thing to wear in the 50's when the doll Bild Lilly, after which Barbie was created, was first moulded in Germany. Her body remained more or less the same all the way to mid 2000's after which the "belly button" body, pictured above was introduced as a response to the concerns about the unrealistic body image Barbie was sending, and also to allow the doll to wear fashions revealing the belly (the corset shaped waist looks quite bad with short shirts and low cut jeans). Granted, maybe Barbie shouldn't be little girl's toy, but as a kid, I never even noticed such things. I believe pressures to be thin come from somewhere completely different than from the doll we play with… Otherwise, howcome men don't have an intense need to look like some action hero of their choice?

Throughout human history, boys and girls have had different expectations. When a boy wants to be the next Jordan or a ninja, no one says he is living in a fairytale. When a girl wants to marry Christian Slater, she is. Men grow up looking for facts and figures. Women are taught to look for or to be a fantasy.
Anorexia Nervosa has been around longer than it was possible to document it. Barbie (and Twiggy) cannot credibly be blamed. It has always had a much higher incidence in females than males, even when being bigger made a woman more attractive to the normal viewer(see medieval and renaissance paintings). One theory of this difference is in this reality/fantasy split. Boys are supposed to plan girls are supposed to dream(makes me Ill to type that). Therefore it is easier for a girl to get locked in the thought that she needs to lose weight than for a boy.
It's worth noting that at the age where girls stop playing with dolls until the age where she is finally living an adult life is the point where a girl is most likely to succumb. Boys tend to lose it later on, when they figure out they can get the toys no one else would buy them.
Good points all around and I've learned some decent doll information. I would still like to see more choice in the market with realistic body types.
