Happy Birthday to My Daughter, the Doctor

Well, okay, she's not a doctor. My beautiful, loving, and often cantankerous daughter +Maddie Cramer turned 15 years old today. She starts high school this fall and the future is wide open to whatever she wants to be. I look at her, as tall as I am at 5'10" and some change, and watch her blossoming into a young woman. For the first time since she was two years old, she is living with me full time and I welcome every up and down that comes with the territory. It's her birthday, but I already got the biggest gift. So, as she goes through high school and considers the future, I look forward to supporting her on her path to becoming an artist, a businesswoman, a chef, or even, from when she was six years old in the story below, a doctor.

My Daughter, The Doctor (July 2006)

I was feeling a little under the weather so I put a movie in for my daughter and lay down on the couch. Part way through the movie she came up to me and said she’d take care of me.

“Aww, cute” I thought.

She proceeded to climb up on top of me sticking her knee into my upset stomach and squishing my arm. “Ooph!” But it was only for a second and she settled in.

“Let me look at your eyes.” she said. Then she pressed her thumb into the top of my right eyelid and peeled it up and around the back of my head.

“A little more gentle doctor!” I told her.

“Okay.” She took the other eyelid and peeled it up only so far as my forehead. Then she put a small plastic compact on top of my left eye with the mirror facing down. As I peered into my eye at close range she told me to “Say ahh!” and looked into my mouth. “I know what you need to feel better.” she told me, and then disappeared up the stairs. “You need a baby in your stomach. That will make you feel better.” she called down.

“Huh?”

She came down the stairs with one of her baby-dolls and shoved it underneath my t-shirt. She crawled on top of me again, and this time pushed the “new baby” into my stomach with her knee.

“Ooph!” I repeated. “Careful doctor.”

She then pulled the blanket down off the back of the couch to cover me up – taking special care to double it up on top of me so as to block out 100% of the very nice feeling air conditioning. “Whew…”

“Here Dad, lift up your head.” and she pulled my head up off the pillow. She took out a plastic silver beaded necklace with a large purple jeweled amulet and secured it around my neck.

“Thanks honey.”

“You nap Dad. You’ll feel better now.”

As she went back to play with her Barbies and watch the movie, I laid my newly bejeweled head back down on the pillow and closed my stretched out sore eyelids imagining how funny I must look underneath a ton of blankets on a hot summer evening with the air conditioning blowing.

But you know what? I have to admit that my eyelids, once they snapped back into place, totally took my mind of the headache that I had. And the plastic baby-doll under my shirt felt nice and cool against my skin, plus the pressure of the blankets and baby-doll on my stomach made the queasiness feel better.

Who knew? My six-year-old daughter the doctor, that’s who.?

Political Quote

Martin O'Malley announced his bid for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. I love this quote from him to CNN addressing his chances in a race where currently Hillary Clinton is the forerunner over him and additional presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders.

"When you start off as potential candidate for president and your name recognition is low, you have to just go from county to county, from town to town and engage people in order to change that around," O'Malley said then. "I guess another way to say it is this: Look, it is not unusual for there to be an inevitable frontrunner early in a contest who has fantastic name recognition, and is therefore inevitable right up until he or she is no longer inevitable."

Robert Rodriguez To Direct ‘Jonny Quest’ At Warner Bros

This could be fun. Although I welcome kid and family friendly fare at the movies, I hope they make this palatable for adults as well. 🙂

Rodriguez has directed From Dusk till Dawn, Sin City, Planet Terror, and a couple of kid-friendly movies that range from the Spy Kids films to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Written by Rodriguez along with Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean). ?

Star Wars Family Fail

Saw on the way home last night. Seriously, do people think these things through?! Maybe it's a single dad family or Queen Amidala is dressed like Leia. Hopefully! Either way, they have Benjamin Button for a kid. O.o?

Geek Felt Plush Robots

Last week at the local comic con, I met local artist Beth Moak and saw her display of geeky felt plush robots. Truly awesome variety and well-made. She says it takes her about two hours of work for each one, unless her daughter is helping and then it takes two and a half. Her daughter agreed. 😉 The price I saw on most was $40. I got her card and web addresses so I can purchase once I decide.

If you communicate with her, she said to tell her the guy in the "It Ain't Easy Being Geeky" Kermit shirt sent 'ya. 😉 Also, if you visit her Facebook, tell her to get over her on G+. She had ZERO idea what G+ even was. I told her that there is a GREAT geek community here.

Also, don't Deadpool and Harley make a cute couple? She let me set that up at her display. 😀

Verizon and NFL, please [blank] off!

[Edit: Apparently I just needed to disable the NFL app. Still, why update with an opt-in on announcements. Also, why not just let me delete the app, especially if I can disable it?]

Apparently the NFL app on my phone updated and now I get useless (to me, as a non fan) update announcements. I went into the app and turned the setting off (I shouldn't have to opt out!) but it does not save the change; when I go back in and check, it's on again. And Verizon does not allow the NFL app to be uninstalled. I mean, I may stream NFL video and exceed my bandwidth so why miss out on that opportunity, right Verizon? Grr. Considering rooting just out of annoyance.?

Anyone else watch Penny Dreadful?

No? Then this post is REALLY odd.

I'm enjoying the progression of season two so far. I feel like there is more depth and a bit more focus.?

Brett Lipton as Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin

+Steven Spence requested a mash-up of +Brett Lipton as Keanu Reeves. With the beard, I didn't want to go for the clean shaven Neo from The Matrix. Looking at movie posters, 47 Ronin seemed to fit the scruff. 😉

Head tilts and shading always give me trouble matching to the mash-up graphic, and this one was no different. I played with it until it looked okay, but had to put it to bed. All in all, I think it looks like Brett could hold his own in a sword fight. I'd watch that.
