I invite +Dirk Reul to the house party. Everyone bring a friend proud to be a dork. 😉

Or just enjoy the song and have a great day my fellow dorks and geeks. 😀

A Dedication in Memory of 9/11 and in Thanks to a Wonderful Spirit on G+

I set out to write something today about the anniversary of 9/11 but, honestly, I was not sure what to say. So much of what I started was either trite or had already been repeated a thousand times over. I pretty much lost any steam to write and was going to just coast by with silent nods at half-mast flags until 9/12 appeared. But, reading through the posts on Google Plus, I came across one in particular that not only touched me, but rekindled the spark to dedicate something to this day.

Why are you seeing an article with a title starting "A Dedication in Memory of 9/11" but with a picture declaring "Thank you" to readers? This is the picture that came into my stream this morning. The thank you is from a young woman named +Cecily Cooper, who had taken time to write a beautiful note to friends, many she had never met in person, for their support through what she very rightfully describes as her "Year from Hell". She began with a very simple, This is a long post; if you don't feel like reading, the picture is worth a thousand words."

9/11 is a day where we see pictures of atrocities and the aftermath, of first responders, mourners, and memorials. All of these things worth their own thousands of words. But here was this picture, on 9/11, of a dark-haired woman in jeans and flip-flops sitting in the grass, a large poster board sign in her hands covering just her mouth but not hiding an obvious smile. Hand-written in large letters were those two simple words. "Thank you!"

I went on to read the rest of her letter and soon after I asked if I could share her words and picture here and she agreed. What her letter said (specific names removed for privacy) follows.

— Begin Cecily's words —
For most of my life I have felt like I never really fit in with people or even with my family for that matter. Never really felt like I had people I could lean on or talk to. I've had a great many trials in my life as most of us have. I've faced them with the mindset that I am the only one that is going to get me through this, and it was time to buck up and bust my way through whatever was in front of me. I'm fiercely independent, to a fault at times.

This year alone, I have gone through a significant amount of trauma and tribulation. I've fought tooth and nail to make my way through having cancer, massive Fibromyalgia flares, grief from my brother dying, a broken heart both literally and metaphorically, both parents nearly dying and horrendously large medical bills resulting in the almost loss of my house and car. I foolishly thought I could do it on my own just like I have been.

There have been a few people on [Google Plus] that have stuck by my side through most of what I call "The Year from Hell". [Their] texts, phone calls, cards, surprises in the mail and messages kept my spirits up and kept me sane. They may not have been with me physically but they were fighting right along beside me. I was with [friends] in Washington D.C when I got the call from my oncologist that I was in remission. If it wasn't for those three ladies, I would have lost it in that moment. The sense of "it is over" was incredibly profound. They kept me grounded. They kept me smiling. They gave me a drink. 😀

A couple of weeks ago in a casual conversation with a select group of people I hold close, I mentioned that there was a fundraiser being planned here in the city I live in and that I was overwhelmed with people that were supposed to be planning it failing to do just that. [A friend] stepped up and took it into her hands to start one here on G+. I am completely blown away by the amount of support that I have been shown by the people here and I would like to take some time to mention them. I know I will forget some and for that I am very sorry. I tried to keep track but "cancer/fibro brain" was in full effect.
— End Cecily's words —

Her letter highlighted and thanked a large group of people who had helped her. Every person from the ones by her side through every step down to those of us who contributed or just shared posts to help in order to spread the word to more people. Cecily did not want to leave out a single person. And then, she wrapped up her letter as follows.

— Begin Cecily's words —
Finally and most importantly, I am so very blessed to call you all my friends. You all have shown me that there really are people out there that care about fellow human beings. The world is a much, much, much better place with all of you in it.

I love you all and…
— End Cecily's words —

And… her words trailed off into her picture, holding her hand written "Thank you!" to everyone.

We will never forget the tragedy of 9/11 or the lives that were lost because of the events of that day. The "bad guys" wanted us to fear, to lose hope, to weaken us as a people; the target was the United States, but they attacked humanity across the globe. Flowers and speeches and television specials reinforce the tragedy of that day in my memory, but when I see the kindness of others on an online social network to a stranger, and then the deep heartfelt appreciation expressed back, I truly gain focus on a day like 9/11.

On 9/11 we really should pause as a nation, as a world, to take note of what some twisted persons tried to take away from all of us. But, so long as there are individuals who can persevere through tragedies, whether nationally televised or lived through quietly, and not only make it through but gain an even more positive attitude, then no attack like 9/11 will ever defeat humanity. When there are people like Cecily who manage to find a wellspring of humanity to help her through rough times, and who reciprocates with an outpouring of love as strong as what was received, then there is no better armor that humanity can wear against those who would try to strip away our hope and strength with their acts of terror.

I remember the terrible events of 9/11. But I have inside a greater appreciation and love for Cecily and others like her who never stop fighting and who open themselves up to the world. I have a greater appreciation and love for all of the people who step in without question or need of thanks to help a stranger; giving what they can because they believe every little bit can still help. I am proud that these people inspire me to try and be the same.

So, on this 9/11, thank "you" Cecily, from me, for your letter and your strength. Thank you for not letting me just coast through 9/11 without fully appreciating not just who and what we lost that day, but what we did not and will never lose as human beings with people like you and all of those that supported and continue to support you. I am a better person for experiencing even a small part of your journey.

Need Your Suggestions! Low Budget Scene Reenactment Weekend

So I asked +Keith Cramer what he was up to this weekend and I told him I had something I wanted him to help me out with. Suggest a scene from television or movies and with whatever props we have on-hand and minimal time and planning, we will attempt to do a photo reenactment of the scene. Keith should really ask more questions before saying yes. Oh, I also volunteered (in absentia) +Lori Cramer and +Kristi Fahlsing to help.

We will attempt as many as we can. Please keep the scenes PG-13. Pics will be posted after the weekend. 😉

EDIT: We were originally thinking stills… but it is apparent we may need to do video clips to truly do silly justice to this concept.

Halloween is coming

I'm so happy I didn't get lice after doing this. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Kid's costumes that have been sitting around Walmart for the entire season and tried on by scores of customers. No problem. Posted this ages ago but just ran into it again looking for something on the hard drive. 😉

Real Life Batman and Captain America Rescue Cat from House Fire

From the link:
John Buckland, dressed as Batman, and Troy Marcum, dressed as Captain America, saw smoke at a house nearby when they were entertaining children as part of their business. They ran to the house along with another bystander, kicked in the door and broke out a window so some smoke could escape. Buckland, a former firefighter, says he crawled into the front room and felt something furry. He grabbed the animal, ran outside and gave it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

To be fair… He thought they said Catwoman was in the house. 😉

Letter to Mom

Mom,

I know we have not spoken in almost eleven years. Your birthday just passed by a couple days ago. I only had to think about it for a moment. The date clicked into place like tumblers in a lock from memory to consciousness; the eighth of September. I was going to write you this year on the actual date. I even planned to do it before midnight. I guess after all this time it does not really matter, but there is just something about the symbolism of the day, that twenty-four hour span, even in our adult years. I was driving with your granddaughter talking about her school breaks when I remembered. There is always so much to think about with summer turning to fall and those initial realizations that holidays will be upon us soon. But those distractions are what ultimately make me remember. I associate this time of year with sitting in the backyard of the old house enjoying the last warm summer weeks with you, not knowing how many we had left. As the days grew longer, Halloween came and was spent trick-or-treating in youth and giving out candy in older years. It was a short jump to Thanksgiving and a house full of family and glorious smells and tastes. Then, in a blink, Christmas morning with gifts being torn open and everyone agreeing how, in another blink, it too was all over. The rest of the car trip, singing and talking with daughter, I reminded myself that there is never enough time with loved ones. There are never enough phone calls. There are never enough letters to send, especially before there is nowhere we can send them.

I miss you Mom. We all do. Happy Birthday.

Love,
Scott

Rare Partridge Family Album Cover

Happy (belated) Birthday Wishes to +Kay Shaw! Digging about the interwebs early this morning, I discovered some secret history of our fellow plusser. 5-year-old Kay was an original member of the 70's super group The Partridge Family! Apparently, audience demographics showed her outshining family matriarch Shirley Jones and executive producer Bob Claver replaced Kay with young upstart David Cassidy.

Happy Birthday Kay!

Happy Birthday Wishes for Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado

Sunday was +Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado's birthday. I did not get home in time to post before the midnight hour; but a day is a day and well wishes are not tied to a date and time.

I captured 128 images from his profile and created a little birthday mosaic for him. Download the original image to see more detail (G+ knocked down the size a bit but you can still see the original tiles made up of Eduardo's wonderful work). Please note, the mosaic options I chose for this crop and tint the images; check Eduardo's profile for his unedited and remarkable paintings.

Thanks Eduardo for another year of sharing your talent with all of us. I hope this year brings you more and greater successes!

Breaking Bad Name Generator

Upside: Pretty Cool looking. I did not have to do it myself in Photoshop.
Downside: Facebook app. Wouldn't work in my Chrome and I had to do it in IE. Apparently only generates on your FB name and you can't enter custom text.

So… There you have it.

Sept 9 Episode Breaking Bad – SKIP if you have not watched!

First… some filler text to avoid any possibility of a spoiler for anyone. I'll generate something from heisenbergipsum.com.

No speeches. Short speech. You lost your partner today. What's his name – Emilio? Emilio is going to prison. The DEA took all your money, your lab. You got nothing. Square one. But you know the business and I know the chemistry. I'm thinking… maybe you and I could partner up.

Just in case you are still reading and did not notice the part where I said DO NOT CONTINUE if you have not seen the Sept 9 episode, one more paragraph of random text before the post starts. 😉

I'm sorry, what were you asking me? Oh, yes, that stupid plastic container I asked you to buy. You see, hydrofluoric acid won't eat through plastic. It will, however, dissolve metal, rock, glass, ceramic. So there's that. How about something with some protein, maybe? Something green, huh?

Okay… I just watched tonight's episode. Great episode all the way until the very end. But, WTH?! Did all of these guys go to the Stormtrooper academy of weapons training? Seriously??? Semi-automatic weapons… what was it? Six guys to two? Clear line of sight? Nothing? Really?!

Sigh. Three more episodes left. This is how it's going to be? Somebody please talk me off the ledge.

Pet Swim Day

Every year after the pool closes, the apartment complex has a day for residents to bring their pets and let them enjoy the water. Daughter counted 13 dogs at one point. Super friendly community day. 🙂

Wonder when cat day is…? 😉

Can you help me with a vote?

I put +Andrew Clifton-Brown and +Dirk Reul into the world of 1960's James Bond. I posted it late last night, so I'm asking those of you who have regular sleep schedules to help me out and vote over at the original post if you have a few seconds. All you have to do is plus either the first or second comment on the post. Losing Bond gets a horrid Photoshop (taking suggestions). 😉

Spineless Classics Full Book Posters

I have posted about these guys before, but they have some new book posters since last time. Attached is a random sampling; many more at the link.

From their site:
A whole book? Is the text even legible?
Yes, hard as it may be to believe, each one of our designs contains the full text of the book. Where there are shapes in the design, the words wrap to the edges rather than being removed or shaded. The apparent font size is roughly 4 point which is perfectly legible with the naked eye if you have 20/20 vision, or with light magnification if you don't.
