DIY Cloud Lights

I absolutely love this project. I'm not sure where I would hang these right now, but I'm dying to try it. Now I also need a "sun" and maybe some kind of "rainbow" effect to go with it… then some controlled wispy fog in the top third of the room. It would be cool to add a lighting effect to the clouds to make them bright, like on a sunny day, or dark and brooding like thunderclouds.

Ideas?

Awesome! DIY Cloud Lights

How amazing would these look hung around your house, in a private reception! And super easy to make too!!

What you will need:
– Cotton Batting (or cleansing pleats)
– Paper Lanterns
– Flameless Candles (Ideally Super Cool LED ones)
– Hot Glue Gun (quantity depends on the number of lanterns, their size and the brightness you want.)

Be sure that little or no heat is generated by the super cool flameless candles. Don't leave your beautiful creation unattended.

Step by Step instructions:
1. Pull at the cotton batting until it looks fluffy, light, and cloud-like.
2. Hot glue it to the outside of the paper lantern in various places.
3. Light the candles and stick them inside.
4. Hang the lantern wherever you'd like.

    Will ponder.

  2. Scott Cramer says:

    Imagining you pondering… 🙂

  3. Kaydie Wells says:

    Oh I'm SO doing this!!

  4. Mz Maau says:

    Does it scare you yet?

  5. Scott Cramer says:

Nope! You'll have to try so much harder! 😉

  6. Mz Maau says:

Perhaps it would help if you knew what I was pondering.

I'm a big fan of DIY . These look cool but I'd rather use the LED lights for a better effect. Bonus upgrade, making the lights music sensitive. That would look cool.

  8. Scott Cramer says:

    Hmm… music sensitive clouds…

  9. Mz Maau says:

Also, putting them on channels so you can cycle through weather patterns by remote.

  10. Scott Cramer says:

+Mz Maau That would be awesome.

  11. Mz Maau says:

The LED thing brought to mind the holiday house light videos. I think LEDs would work better, less heat output to set your cotton on fire.

  12. Mz Maau says:

Also, IKEA has lots of interesting lighting fixtures for cheap, might be a good place to start. Can you work an Arduino board into the mix somehow for the control aspect? Maybe set up an interface you can access by phone if you want, or set up a program to run for hours, like for a party.

  13. Brendan Farrell says:

really easy to wire up too.

  14. Scott Cramer says:

Can movement be achieved without it looking like it is on a track or sounding all mechanized?

  15. Mz Maau says:

I would imagine so, well-places loose draped wires perhaps? Hrm.

  16. Mz Maau says:

What kind of movement do you want?

  17. Scott Cramer says:

+Mz Maau That sounds like a loaded question.

  18. Brendan Farrell says:

Are you talking soft left/right movement?

  19. Mz Maau says:

Or vertical, or both? Circular, a-la Winnie's little rain cloud?

    Everything is a loaded question.

  20. Mz Maau says:

Not sure if she'll respond, but +Annika O'Brien might be up for this challenge.

  21. Scott Cramer says:

Movement that does not look obviously scripted and repetitive would be the coolest.

  22. Mz Maau says:

Hmmm… I would imagine then the toughest bit will be setting up the track. Then throw a randomizer in the programming.
