Scientists as drawn by 7th graders before and after learning about them

These are great. Preconceived notions intrigue me, and ideas that kids get in their heads. So I especially found this interesting!

Thanks +Yvan Da Silva for the post.

Drawings of Scientists
BEFORE. AFTER. I think of a scientist as very dedicated to his work. He is kind of crazy, talking always quickly. He constantly is getting new ideas. He is always asking questions and can be annoying….

  1. Masha du Toit says:

In some ways the text description of the scientist in the before is more interesting than the second one. "He listens to others' ideas and questions them." Pretty accurate 🙂

  2. Scott Cramer says:

I wonder if the kids are now more apt or less apt to want to become a scientist now. I can see it removing the mystery and uniqueness of what they originally thought a scientist was; now they are just ordinary people.

  3. Masha du Toit says:

I suppose it could go either way. Kids may feel less intimidated, it might seem more "possible".

  4. Scott Cramer says:

Yes, very true. I think kids who are interested in the science but worried that it is beyond them would find it more accessible and be more likely to go into the field. Kids who are interested in the "scientist stereotype" or wanting to be what they perceive as better or different might not be as interested when they find out scientists are just people like everyone else.

  5. Christine Bogart says:

Huh. I guess none of these kids had family members who are scientists..

  6. Scott Cramer says:

    +Christine Bogart Good call!

  7. Scott Cramer says:

+Christine Bogart p.s., Teacher? That would be another profession that would be interesting to see a before and after. You might have to go with younger kids who don't think of their teachers as anything except in the classroom.

  8. Christine Bogart says:

That is true, although I do seem to freak my 10th graders out a bit when I run into them in the grocery store. They never know quite how to handle that and most try to avoid having to say anything. Heh. It's kind of funny.

  9. Scott Cramer says:

+Christine Bogart hehe, Then they are also like, "Mrs. Bogart likes chocolate covered Oreos?!?" Not to mention if you are shopping in one of the big box stores, covering up anything you don't care to have seen. I can just imagine me as a teacher and having a pack of my undershorts in the cart. lol

  10. Christine Bogart says:

Heh heh, I get a little embarrassed when they see me with junk food in my shopping cart, lol.
