+Keith Cramer and I are in a Star Wars costume contest initiated by +Halfdan Reschat. By April 1st, we have to have our costumes ready for judging. Loser dresses as Princess Leia, in her slave girl costume, in a public hangout (if we can find one to fit our girth). Links to related posts are below if you want to read more.
So I had already gotten the breast and back plates banged into shape (literally). My initial goal was to get a very thin plastic sheet to cut and secure to the breast and back plates and then paint that. I could not find plastic sheets large enough anywhere; closest I could find were 8.5×11 sheet protectors at the office supply store. Come to find out later I could have gone to the Education Art & Supply Store here in town. Live and learn! So, I ended up with a couple yards of clear vinyl from the fabric store. I cut, stretched, and mounted this on the breast and back plates.
I wanted to get at least the breast plate painted yesterday morning. The spray paint said if the surface was smooth to sand it lightly first. I could not find any sandpaper or steel wool, or even a wire brush. I tried an SOS pad from under the sink. Not effective. I searched everywhere again. No dice. Finally I picked up a shingle that had blown off the roof and used that as my sandpaper. Patience is not one of my virtues. Then, I proceeded to paint. All in all, well, it's gold. I think covering it in plastic would have worked better but I did not have any and the deadline is looming. The vinyl works but it ripples and puckers. Also, I should have covered the metal lath completely with duct tape because the sharp edges poked through the vinyl a bit, especially after sanding it with a roof shingle. Last night, I got the back plate covered and painted (I skipped the sanding part).
I also have completed calf and thigh coverings out of posterboard which I also painted gold. I have a bunch of industrial strength velcro to hold this mess together. I still have to do the butt/codpiece, arms, knees, feet, hands, and details. Also, at present, the head is just a printed image on card stock that originally came from a scan of the back of an old cereal box. No problem. lol In conclusion, this will definitely be the C3PO who has been beat up walking through the Tatooine dessert and dumped into the Jawa Sandcrawler and NOT the C3PO all shiney and getting a medal after the destruction of the Death Star. References thrown in for appropriate Geekiness (like I had to worry).
More later! π

Tag +Tiffany Henry (because she is obsessed with a man in gold vinyl) π
You are so slow. I +1'd this before you tagged me :p
+Tiffany Henry Dang! And I was just going to post that fact but you beat me to it! You are scary fast this evening, my dear. π
Gold armor isn't as good as Diamond armor. It's like really strong tissue paper.
Still won't protect you from a Creeper blast.
Right +Matt Cowan?
OH MY GAWWWWWWWWWWD! !
( +Azure Mallone you're just a jealous bitch! )
+Azure Mallone Well, under the gold coloring is diamond lath. Does that count? (ignoring the fact that the diamond only refers to the pattern)
Lookin' good!
In retrospect you probably could have covered the whole thing in duct tape and painted that gold
Jealous? I have Diamond everything.
Can you speak Boche?
Sorry +Azure Mallone in fact you're awesome!
I'm fluent in it. Though +Keith Cramer and +Scott Cramer speak a peculiar dialect. I don't know where they picked it up.
+Emilio Boronali Language! B*tch much more acceptable.
+Allen Simpson Yeah. Pretty close. Although I would have had the lines between the tape to deal with so I think I'm marginally better with this method. PLUS, this stuff was only $2.99 a yard (cheaper than duct tape).
+Scott Cramer Sorry ! Sorry ! Sorry ! Won't do it again ! { whip! whip! }
+Emilio Boronali Lol π I know I know. I actually have a full page Parental Advisory sign on my office door warning entrants of my language.
where's the pickaxe :p
+Matt Cowan ha π
It is beginning to look like something (what exactly, I'm not sure).
Later on today (it's 8:30 in the morning here) I'm planning on posting the last update from me before the deadline (and I'll include links to all updates – by all three of us).
Get a move on it's the 30th already π
Happy TGIF +Scott Cramer ;I am dying to see Keith in the Princess Leia costume…since you had to endure the condiments it is only "right"…go get him!
snort
So much carnage is about to happen. This is a wonderful event. ^.^
Oh, ye of little faith!
Idk +Scott Cramer as of his last update you were way ahead of +Keith Cramer now i dont want to choose a favorite but if i was able to put money (or some other goods) on this race i would bet the farm on Scott….which is sad because of the two droids i like R2 more.
+Allen Simpson I have another update coming up in the next half hour. Waiting for some pictures from +Kristi Fahlsing that she e-mailed from her phone. I still have a good amount of detail work tomorrow to do… but I think I'll best the original photo. Now to just best +Keith Cramer! lol
Last i saw +Keith Cramer only had some material and a cylindrical pvc frame so unless he put the pedal to the metal he is sunk….but on the other side he does have a lot less physical pieces to make R2 is more in the paint detail and 3PO is a lot of acutΓ©mon.
My latest update: http://goo.gl/3AuAM
Need adhesives!!
I have plenty of faith!
I fully expect to be laughing about this for months!
This reminds me of the time my brother, +Kelly Hatcher, made me duct tape his upper body so that he could make a pattern for armor or something related to his fencing gear.
